 Help on searching data

Search form allows you to search for data sets in up to 3 or all fields of data set description and use logical operators AND, OR, NOT.

Search function is possible in these fields of data description:

  • author – search is executed in AuthEnty and othId fields of DDI standard. Category of authors include research project leader, authors of methodological part of the research, authors of questionnaire and sometimes other persons; if authors are unknown, research funding agency is indicated.
  • title – search is executed in titl, subTitl, altTitl and parTitl fields of DDI Standard: title, subtitle, alternative title and parallel title.
  • keyword – search is executed in keywords and top classification fields (DDI fields keyword and2.2.1.2 topcClas.
Alternatively, you can search for keywords in with the help of HASSET and ELLST thesauri.
  • summary – searches in summary field, where research objectives, methods and other information are provided. (DDI field 2.2.2 abstract).
  • year of research – searches in DDI field prodDatefield, where the end year of the data collection (field) stage is indicated.
  • all fields – search is executed in all previously mentioned fields.

Sometimes it is easier to find data by browsing:

  • browse all data – a list of all data is provided, starting with the new ones (sorted by the year of research completion and not by date of publication in LiDA catalogue!).
  • browse by author - alphabetical list of research authors is provided with the links to their research data in LiDA. Authors are: research project leader, authors of research methodology and questionnaires, and other persons; if the authors are unknown, funding entites are indicated. Information comes from DDI fields AuthEnty, othId, and producer.
  • browse by theme – two-level hierarchy of themes with links to research data, themes and sub-themes coming from DDI field topcClas). A research data can belong to several themes and sub-themes. Top classification is adapted to Lithuanian language from UK Data Archive classification of themes.
  • browse by depositor – depositors (organisations or research leaders) are listed in alphabetical order (data taken from DDI field depositr).
  • browse by series – a list of series is provided. A series may include a group of research that has similar thematic content and this is done by LiDA staff during data cataloguing process (data from DDI field serName).

Search variables - searches for keywords in metadata of variables. In some of the survey data all of the variables (e.g., questions in a questionnaire) are described by keywords, therefore it is possible to find all studies that employed identical or similar questions/variables. Variables are described using the same vocabulary of keywords as documenting the data set (see search by keyword and search with HASSET and ELLST thesauri. The search is executed in these fields of a variable: keywords, label and a text of a question in questionnaire. [coming soon]

Browse by theme – for the sake of convenience, browse by theme link is replicated in the main left menu. Two-level hierarchy of themes with links to research data is displayed, themes and sub-themes coming from DDI field topcClas). A research data can belong to several themes and sub-themes. Top classification is adapted to Lithuanian language from UK Data Archive classification of themes.

Specialized collections – in a meanwhile all data sets belong to Survey data collection. In the near future these exemplary collections will be available: Historical statistical data sets, Data on Lithuanian political system, Qualitative data sets. [coming soon]

New data sets – a list of recently published data sets in LiDA (data coming from DDI field depDate).

Searching with HASSET and ELLST thesauri (controlled vocabularies) helps to find broader, narrower or related terms to a given keyword and get a list of data sets that are related to these keywords and terms. Keywords from HASSET and ELLST thesauri are assigned to data sets and (in some cases) to variables of a data set during cataloguing process in LiDA.
